There are few sites that capture theculture and social atmosphere of the early 18th century in Bohemia as vividlyas Kuks in the eastern part of the country. The spa settlement with its Hospitalof the Brothers Hospitallers, created in the late 17th century in thepicturesque valley of the Elbe River, is, on the one hand, an exceptionalcomplex which, in both its conceptual design and artistic quality, had fewparallels in its time. On the other hand, it also represents a characteristicexample of contemporary ideas concerning appropriate spiritual and socialrepresentation, and stands as one of many testimonies to the wealth, ambitions, but also the limitations of the Bohemian Baroque aristocracy.
