Norwegian Landscape with a Pine Tree

This painting dates from between summer 1908 and autumn 1910, when artist Konrad Mägi lived in various places in Norway, also holding an exhibition in Oslo. Today Mägi is the most celebrated painter of Estonian Modernism.

Associated primarily with Symbolism due to its intense colours, rather dream-like atmosphere and strong emphasis on affectiveness, the painting depicts an unreal-looking place, where the actual landscape has become distorted with the imaginary, even if we were to associate the red bog with evening light of a sunset.
